WHO RUNS THE WORLD? SQUIRRELS!

Fourteen-year-old Doreen Green moved from sunny California to the suburbs of New Jersey. She must start at a new school, make new friends, and continue to hide her tail. Yep, Doreen has the powers of . . . a squirrel!

After failing at several attempts to find her new BFF, Doreen feels lonely and trapped, liked a caged animal. Then one day Doreen uses her extraordinary powers to stop a group of troublemakers from causing mischief in the neighborhood, and her whole life changes. Everyone at school is talking about it! Doreen contemplates becoming a full-fledged Super Hero. And thus, Squirrel Girl is born!

She saves cats from trees, keeps the sidewalks clean, and dissuades vandalism. All is well until a real-life Super Villain steps out of the shadows and declares Squirrel Girl his archenemy. Can Doreen balance being a teenager and a Super Hero? Or will she go . . . NUTS?

Spoiler Free Review:

This was totally a cover buy. By my friend. Since I’ve been successfully stopping myself from purchasing any new book for a Whooping 35 Weeks! Yea baby! So my friend was kind enough to reward me for my efforts. Since I obviously could not… *RESIST

This book probably counts as the first novel I’ve read in the Marvel universe. I’ve previously dabbled with some comic books, but no full on novels before.

Ms. Marvel Collection. Vol.1: No Normal | Ms. Marvel Collection. Vol.2: Generation Why

The cover is beautiful and does a fantastic job showcasing the story it holds inside. As for the novel itself, I found it quirky, nerdy, funny and squirrely. Its mostly targeted for younger audiences I believe. However, that did not stop me from enjoying it!

I love how Doreen is simply being herself without caring what other people think or say. Even though she does get bullied for it at school. Which the author very perfectly explains by letting Doreen get depressed, sad and cry for a little bit. Making her more realistic and relatable.

Doreen is incredibly positive and friendly. She doesn’t let all the obstacles she goes through on a daily basis ruin her goals. And that is a wonderful characteristic for a role model for young kids. She does however have the Clark Kent thing where she hides her identity with a pair of squirrel ears… but not her actual face.. at least Clark wore glasses..

DIVERSITY ALERT: How is it that after reading hundreds of books, this is the first time I’ve ever met a character who requires a hearing aid and speaks in sign language. Hellllo where are all the authors?? Take note of this! I’m seriously so shocked that it took this long for that community to be represented in a novel!

All in all, I did enjoy this book very much. I do recommend everyone to read it. Specifically the main target audience of 15 year olds and younger. Doreen is an awesome superhero and a role model. We need more of Doreen.

Until Next Time!
