What does liberty mean for a freedman?

Calabar was brought from Africa to North Carolina as a boy and sold on the docks as chattel property to a plantation owner. On the plantation, he learned the intricacies of indigo production, fell in love, and started a family.

Abruptly released from bondage, he must find his way in a society that has no place for him, but which is itself struggling with the threat of British domination. Reeling from personal griefs, and drawn into the chaos of the Revolution, Calabar knows that the wrong moves could cost him his freedom – and that of the nation.

The Freedman is Hedbor’s standalone novel set in North Carolina from his Tales From a Revolution series, in which he examines the American War of Independence as it unfolded in each of the colonies. If you like enthralling stories of familiar events from unfamiliar viewpoints, you’ll love The Freedman.

Spoiler Free Review:

This was a masterpiece. A story of freedom, hardship, war, love, friendship and loyalty. I’m so glad that I had the chance to enjoy this audiobook because it opened my eyes to a whole new world and perspective.

The Freedman was so amazing to me that I ended up finishing it all in one day. And at normal speed at that. I’m not entirely sure if the book is historically accurate or not, but who even cares? I mean the plot and characters more than made up for that.

I’ve never read any other book by this author, so this review isn’t to judge the whole series, just this book. Not that it matters, since I’ve liked it right? Anyway, I mentioned this point because this book is actually the ninth in the series, but I was able to enjoy it as a standalone. So don’t worry :p

The narration was spot on, I was immediately transported into this timeline. There was strong emotion throughout the book, from both the author and narrator. In conclusion, a total recommend.
